Match : 3rd XI v Mossley 5ths Date : 2002-03-09 Venue : A Score : 1-1 Scorers : Menaul
By 3rd XI Captain There can be no doubt that the 3rd XI let a point slip away in this encounter. A blistering first half performance was marred by a lacklustre second half... but the game should've been beyond Mossley's reach well before the first half whistle. The dominance of Greer, Menaul and Johnson down the right wing caused Mossley no end of trouble. Swann was a useful target and his layoffs to the supporting midfield were, at times, inspirational. A post was struck by Greer, short corners went a-begging, another post was struck by Greer... it looked like it was going to be one of those days. Eventually, Menaul rocketted the ball into the back of the net as a result of a penalty-corner. The pace was upped as was the pressure on the Mossley defence. The half-time whistle, however, blew... The good work of the first half was forgotten and the team slipped into a familiar routine of battling against themselves. Mossley changed their formation slightly by pushing their sweeper forward and swapping their markers at the back. A "silly" short-corner was gifted to Mossley and the inevitable happened... an equaliser. The score-line stood at the final whistle. The match, from a spectator view-point would've been very entertaining. The umpiring would've rivalled Senior League status with both Jimmy Gordon and Stuart Campbell excellent.
