Match : 1st XI v Raphoe Date : 1992-11-28 Venue : H Score : 1-1 Scorers : Peter Torrens
By The Webmaster At a chilly Valley Leisure Centre, the 1st were deprived of their first win of the league campagin by a controversial oversight by ’rookie’ umpire Mr. Sam Pastic when he failed to halt the game when the ball was lifted into the circle. He then followed that up with a curious interpretation of the offside rule. Alas, the other umpire, Mr. W. Stayne, was unable to be of assistance as the incident occurred outside his 3 foot range of vision. All this happened after East had, deservedly, taken the lead through a ’tamely’ hit prod by Peter Torrens, which was helped int he net by the Raphoe goalkeeper following an unusually competent short corner routine. Further pressure and short corner attempts proved fruitless, of course. Captain Raymond Hughes did point out - "You must remember, chaps, it was a Saturday after all!" The half time whistle saw the team change ends and all the 1sts managed to go in the right direction (which is unequivocal proof that Mr. R. Hughes’ organising abilities are improving). In an exciting half, entertainment was ’a plenty’ and both defences were ’tremedeuce’ as each team pressed for the winner. East made a tactical change but failed to tell anybody and consequently S. Duffbags was knocked out when his long-time friend A. McDonald mistook his head for the ball. A well deserved point for East leads one to believe that they won’t remain in the relegation zone for long, but something from their next match at Down is crucial.
