Match : 1st XI v Omagh Date : 2003-03-08 Venue : A Score : 1-0 Scorers : Burgess
By Stephen Swann The team travelled to Omagh without the services of Hamill, Fraser, Watters, Currie and Caldwell (due to work, dodgy foot, dodgy arm, work and dodgy foot!). However, the team responded well to having some of their star players missing. Andrew Bell was drafted into the team for a 1st XI debut at right back and performed well and must surely be confident of naililng a more permanent place in the team in the very near future. The match was an end-to-end encounter for the first 20 minutes, although the Green Machine were threatening the Omagh goal whereas Omagh struggled to get into the East circle. Shortly before half-time, Omagh were reduced to 10 men as one of their players received his marching orders following some bizarre challenges and some even more bizarre outbursts at his own team mates. As always, though, playing against a dogged 10 man defence isn't easy. The second half saw Graeme Reid push further up the pitch and the game did open up. Short corner after short corner were won, but to no avail. Burgess missed five sitters (by his own admission), but did eventually redeem himself with what was to be the deciding goal. Irwin had a chance taken of the line and an East goal was disallowed in controversial circumstances. All in all, a satisfying performance with some fine indivudal pieces of skill being displayed - particularly from aerials!
