Match : 3rd XI v Mossley 5ths Date : 2002-12-27 Venue : H Score : 0-6 Scorers :
By Stuart Campbell Friday night seen a very inexperienced East Antrim side take on the much more mature and worldly wise Mossley at the Glade. For most of the first half East contained Mossley and had a number of half chances on the break but on the stroke of half time Mossley made the breakthrough with a somewhat fortunate rick-a-shea falling to their center forward who somehow finished from 1 yard out. This was not a dirty game but some Mossley players were trying very hard to turn it into one. First Soupy was viciously assaulted with a stick around the shin, a tackle which could end carreers. No attempt to get the ball but amazingly only a yellow card was issued. Then as Eddie was about to shoot on goal he was struck around the back of the head with a stick. Accidental?? Only the assailant knows the answer to that one. Again Mossley got off lightly with only a short corner being awarded. Mossley scored five goals in the second half after East took the tactical decision to press forward in numbers after going 2-0 down. Mossley ran out comfortable 6-0 winners but the scoreline does flatter them. East gave a spirited performance were well organised all over the pitch and continued to attack the Mossley goal right up to the end. Ultimately Mossleys clinical finishing was the difference. On Friday night East played 10 players under 18 years of age, Mossley played none. We got a glimpse of the future. It is not Yellow and Marroon it is East Antrim Green. After the game was over a Mossley player threatened to end one of our players carreers. The fact that the East player was half his size, probably half his age and that the game was well over seemed to have little bearing on this mindless act of bullishness. A particualrly unsavuory incident which I hope I never hear the like of again. I trust that Mossley will deal with this problem and can assure us it will never happen again.
