Match Report

By Stephen Swann

What an eventful night... First, there was a floodlight failure, and the lads had to hang around for some time waiting for the situation to be resolved.

WHen the game did get underway, it would certainly have been entertaining to watch. Cookstown played some great hockey, without pentrating too much. East, however, struggled to retain possession!

Cookstown did take the lead in the first half, but near the end of the half, James Greer was carried from the battle zone after damaging his right knee.

East down to 10 men, star midfielder gone and playing against a quality team.

Did the heads go down?

Like heck they did. Within 2 minutes of the restart, Cookstown scored - 2-0! The men in green, however, pushed forward. Sheer brilliance from Bob Watters powering down the left wing resulted in a cross which was met, reverse-stick, by Daniel Caldwell. His shot had a tremendous amount of spin on it as it headed for the goal-line. For some reason, the goalkeeper stepped aside, and the defender on the line "allowed" the ball to cross! 2-1, and everyone on the pitch just looked on in amazement.

The extra man, however, did tell when it mattered. Two more goals were scored to make the final score 4-1.

HOWEVER... this was a mighty performance with some solid displays. Fraser in nets was outstanding. Bob Watters and David Menaul were great. Stevie Nicholl ran and ran. Mark McDonald did an excellent job against a very tricky right winger. Eddie Baird and Daniel Caldwell worked tirelessly. And the old boys - Watson, Gillespie and Swann - sweated buckets!

Wins may put a smile on your face, put performances like this should give you a warm glow inside.
